Plan size: how many GB do you need?

How many GB do I need for my trip?

Count the days, then the habits. A phone used for maps, messaging and browsing needs roughly 150–400 MB a day; social video feeds, streaming and video calls each add hundreds of MB to over a GB a day; a laptop on the hotspot can add several GB. These guides size weekends, 10-day trips and months, and check daily-cap plans.

What does 1 GB of data actually get you? Hours by app, then 5 and 10 GB

1 GB is 100+ hours of navigation, 23 hours of Spotify Normal, 6 hours of Netflix Save Data or under 2 hours of a Zoom video call. Tables for 1, 5, 10 GB.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB a day enough?

For sightseeing days with maps, messaging, browsing and some social media, usually yes. Not for daily long video calls, hours of streaming or a laptop on the hotspot.

How much buffer should I add?

About 15–20% on top of the top of your estimated range, for arrival days and surprises.

Is it better to buy more GB than I need?

It is safer to size from the top of your range. If the plan supports top-ups you can start smaller, but running out mid-trip is more hassle than a slightly bigger plan.
