How many GB do I need for my trip? Estimate it by activity

Generic "GB per week" advice ignores the thing that matters, which is what you will do. This is the lab method: activities × hours × a published or measured rate, with a buffer and a daily-cap check.

By eSIM Data Deals editorial deskPublished Updated 5 min readData usage by activity
Short answer

Multiply the hours you will spend on each activity by a per-hour range, add uploads, multiply by trip days and add a 10–20% buffer. Video and calls usually decide the answer: an hour of video calls can use more than a week of maps. If a plan caps full-speed data per day, check your heaviest day too.

What is the simplest accurate way to estimate travel data?

Split the trip into activities, because each one uses data at a very different rate. The formula is plain arithmetic:

Formula

Trip GB = Σ (hours per day × GB per hour) × days + uploads + buffer

The hard part is the rates. Where an app or OS vendor publishes a figure, we use it. Where none exists, we give a wide planning range and a way to measure your own. Here is the table the GB estimator uses:

How much data does each activity use per hour?

Typical ranges; real use varies by app, quality and network. Read 6 November 2026.
ActivityTypical range per hourWhere the figure comes from
Maps and navigation5–60 MBTripoSIM help (5–10 MB/h navigation) + planning headroom
Web, email and messaging20–120 MBPlanning assumption; varies with photos and video in chats
Social feeds with video0.17–0.7 GBPlanning assumption, set like mobile video streaming
Video: Netflix mobile Save Data / Low0.17–0.3 GBNetflix Help Center
Video: Netflix Mediumup to 0.7 GBNetflix Help Center
Video: Netflix HDup to 3 GBNetflix Help Center
Music: Spotify Normal to Very high43–144 MBSpotify bitrates × 0.45
Video call, 1:1 (Zoom high quality to 720p)0.54–1.08 GBZoom bandwidth figures, up + down
Laptop on hotspot, light work (no calls)0.2–0.6 GBPlanning assumption; updates and sync excluded
Photo upload2–5 MB per photoPlanning assumption; check your photo sizes

Two things stand out. Video and calls are measured in GB per hour. Maps, messaging and music are measured in MB. Getting the video and call hours right matters far more than getting the map hours exactly right.

How do I estimate my trip step by step?

  1. List what you will do. Write down each activity: maps, messaging and web, social feeds, video, music, calls, laptop use, photo uploads.
  2. Give each one hours per day. Use a typical day of the trip, not your home routine. Be honest about video and calls.
  3. Multiply by a per-hour range. Use the low and high figure for each activity from the reference table, or your own measured rate.
  4. Add uploads and background use. Count photos and clips you will upload, and leave room for app activity you did not plan.
  5. Multiply by trip days and add a buffer. Use the top of the range and add 10–20% so you are not topping up on the last day.
  6. Check your heaviest day against any daily cap. If a plan limits full-speed data per day, compare your heaviest day with that amount, not your trip total.
  7. Measure on day one and adjust. Read the phone's per-app counter after the first day and top up or change habits early.

Three worked trips

All three use the ranges above. They are examples to show the arithmetic, not offers or forecasts for you.

A: Four-day city break, phone only

Per day ≈ 0.24–1.0 GB. Four days ≈ 1–4 GB; with a 15% buffer, look at about 4.6 GB.
ActivityHours/dayPer day (low–high)
Maps210–120 MB
Web and messaging240–240 MB
Social feeds0.585–350 MB
Music143–144 MB
Photos uploaded30 photos60–150 MB

B: Ten-day holiday with evening video

Per day ≈ 0.52–1.6 GB. Ten days ≈ 5.2–16 GB; with a 15% buffer, look at about 18.4 GB. Changing the video to HD would add up to about 27 GB more.
ActivityHours/dayPer day (low–high)
Maps1.58–90 MB
Web and messaging240–240 MB
Social feeds1170–700 MB
Video, Netflix Save Data/Low1170–300 MB
Video call home (1:1)0.25135–270 MB

C: Two-week work trip with a laptop

Per day ≈ 1.46–3.72 GB. Fourteen days ≈ 20–52 GB, before any operating-system update. With a 15% buffer, look at about 60 GB, or reduce calls and set the laptop to metered.
ActivityHours/dayPer day (low–high)
Video meetings (1:1 to 720p)1.50.81–1.62 GB
Laptop on hotspot, light work30.6–1.8 GB
Maps15–60 MB
Web and messaging240–240 MB

The work trip shows why the range matters: the same habits can come out at 20 GB or 52 GB depending on video quality and how much the laptop syncs. Our laptop hotspot guide shows how to hold it near the low end.

How do daily caps change the estimate?

A plan sold as unlimited often gives a fixed amount of full-speed data per day and then slows down. For those plans the trip total matters less than your heaviest day. In example C, a 1.5-hour meeting day already reaches 0.81–1.62 GB before any laptop use. On a plan with 1 GB a day at full speed, the afternoon could run on the slowed speed.

The fair-use reading guide shows which lines of a plan to check, and the throttling guide shows how to tell when you have hit a cap.

How do I replace our ranges with my own numbers?

A day of measuring at home beats any table, ours included:

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular lists data per app for the current period. Tap Reset Statistics at the bottom the day before you measure.
  • Pixel and many Android phones: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage, with a date range picker.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off for a representative half-day and use your phone the way you will on the trip. Divide each app's figure by the hours you used it.

Then type your rates over ours in the GB estimator. On the trip, check the same screen after the first day. That is the earliest, cheapest moment to top up or change a habit.

Frequently asked questions

How much data do I need for a week abroad?

It depends on what you do, not on the week. Maps, messaging and music for a week can fit in about 1–2 GB, while an hour of video calls or HD video a day can add many GB. Use the steps on this page or the GB estimator to get a range for your own plans.

Should I buy a bigger plan just in case?

Add a buffer of 10–20% on top of the high end of your estimate. Beyond that, a plan you can top up is often more flexible than buying far more than you need. TripoSIM says top-ups can be bought from its dashboard when a plan supports them.

Is a daily-cap "unlimited" plan better than a fixed GB plan?

It depends on how even your days are. A daily cap suits steady use below the cap. A fixed total suits uneven use, such as one heavy work day and several light ones. Compare your heaviest day with the daily full-speed amount.

How accurate are online data calculators?

They are only as good as their assumptions. Use one that shows its per-hour rates and lets you change them. Measuring your own apps for a day before the trip will always beat a generic figure.
