How much data does WhatsApp use per day abroad?

WhatsApp is the app many travellers keep open all day. Text costs almost nothing. What decides your daily number is media in busy groups and how long you talk on calls.

Short answer

A day of WhatsApp text with some photos and voice notes is typically tens of megabytes, up to about 150 MB in busy groups. Voice calls add roughly 1 MB a minute by our planning rate, and video calls are far heavier. WhatsApp keeps working on a data-only travel eSIM because it stays registered to your home number.

What uses data in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp does not publish data per message or per minute, so the useful way to think about it is by part. Each part has a very different cost:

No WhatsApp figures exist; voice uses Zoom's published audio bandwidth (60–80 kbit/s each way × 0.45) as a typical app voice rate. Others are planning ranges. Measure your own.
PartData (planning range)What changes it
Text messagestiny; hundreds of messages barely registerAlmost nothing
Photos sent or received≈ 2–5 MB eachMedia upload quality (Standard vs HD); auto-download
Voice notessmall; well under a voice call per minuteLength
Videos sent or receivedseveral MB to tens of MB eachLength, auto-download, upload quality

Video calls≈ 0.5–2 GB an hour (TripoSIM plans 1–2 GB)Camera on or off; group size

Messages are cheap; media and calls are not. That gives three typical days:

WhatsApp, three example days (MB)Light chat: 37 MB (Text 2 MB, Photos 30 MB, Voice notes 5 MB); Busy groups: 155 MB (Text 5 MB, Photos 75 MB, Voice notes 15 MB, Videos 60 MB); Plus a 30-min voice call: 187 MB (Text 5 MB, Photos 75 MB, Voice notes 15 MB, Videos 60 MB, Voice call 32 MB)WhatsApp, three example days (MB)Light chatText: 2 MBPhotos: 30 MBVoice notes: 5 MB37 MBBusy groupsText: 5 MBPhotos: 75 MBVoice notes: 15 MBVideos: 60 MB155 MBPlus a 30-min voice callText: 5 MBPhotos: 75 MBVoice notes: 15 MBVideos: 60 MBVoice call: 32 MB187 MBTextPhotosVoice notesVideosVoice call

How much do WhatsApp calls use?

A voice call is the second-cheapest thing WhatsApp does after text. At a typical app voice rate of 54–72 MB an hour, a 20-minute call home is roughly 18–24 MB. Video calls are a different scale. WhatsApp doesn't publish a rate. TripoSIM's help centre plans about 1–2 GB an hour for a standard video call, and Zoom's published bandwidth puts a 1:1 call in high quality at about 0.54 GB an hour, counting both directions, so the real figure depends heavily on quality. If a daily video call home is part of your trip, it will be the largest item in your data budget.

WhatsApp has a Use less data for calls switch in Settings → Storage and data. It trades some call quality for less data, which is useful on a slow or capped line.

Which WhatsApp settings save the most data?

  1. Media auto-download. In Settings → Storage and data, set When using mobile data and When roaming to no media, or photos only. On a travel eSIM the phone may report either state, so set both. Then tap to download the videos you actually want.
  2. Media upload quality. In the same screen, Standard quality sends smaller photos and videos than HD.
  3. Use less data for calls. Turn it on when the line is slow or after a daily full-speed cap.
  4. Chat backup on Wi-Fi. iPhone backs up WhatsApp to iCloud and Android to Google Drive. Make sure backups don't run over mobile data while you travel (on Android, check the cellular option under Chats → Chat backup).

Does WhatsApp need a phone number on the travel eSIM?

No. WhatsApp is registered to the number you signed up with, and it uses whichever line carries mobile data. With your home SIM still installed for calls and texts, and the travel eSIM chosen for data, WhatsApp keeps working as normal. A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, so there is nothing to register it to anyway. TripoSIM says the same in its help centre: its eSIMs are data only, and apps like WhatsApp work over the eSIM's data connection.

There is no need to change your WhatsApp number for the trip. Your account, your chats and the number your contacts see all stay with the number you registered.

Why do busy groups cost so much?

Because group media arrives whether or not you look at it, if auto-download is on. A family or friends group that shares 30 photos and a few videos a day can move 150 MB or more onto your plan by itself. With auto-download off, the same group costs a few megabytes: the thumbnails and the text. You still see everything and choose what to open.

How do I see what WhatsApp used today?

WhatsApp has its own counter in Settings → Storage and data → Network usage, broken down by messages, media, calls and status. Reset it when you land. The phone's per-app list (Settings → Cellular on iPhone, SIMs → App data usage on Pixel) shows the same total from the phone's side. After one day you will know your own WhatsApp number, which beats any table.

What does a week of WhatsApp add up to?

Using the example days above, as labelled arithmetic rather than measurements:

Example arithmetic from the planning ranges above and TripoSIM's 1–2 GB/h video-call planning figure.
Week of WhatsAppPer daySeven days
Busy groups, auto-download on≈ 155 MB≈ 1.1 GB
Busy groups + 20-minute voice call daily≈ 175 MB≈ 1.2 GB
Busy groups, auto-download off≈ 20–40 MB≈ 0.15–0.3 GB
Plus a 20-minute video call daily (1–2 GB/h)+ ≈ 0.33–0.67 GB+ ≈ 2.3–4.7 GB

The table shows the two decisions that matter: auto-download, which can change a week by about a gigabyte, and video calls, which can change it by several. Everything else in WhatsApp is small.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp work on a data-only eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to the number you registered with, not to the line carrying data, so it keeps working over the travel eSIM's data. Don't re-register it abroad: a data-only eSIM has no phone number of its own.

How much data does a 10-minute WhatsApp voice call use?

WhatsApp does not publish a figure. Using a typical app voice-call rate of 54–72 MB an hour (Zoom's published audio bandwidth, converted), ten minutes is roughly 9–12 MB. Check your own with the per-app counter.

Does WhatsApp use data in the background?

Some: it receives messages, downloads media if auto-download is on, and may back up chats. Set auto-download to No media on mobile data and keep backups to Wi-Fi.

Do WhatsApp statuses use a lot of data?

Video statuses can, because they download as you view them. Watch them on Wi-Fi if data is tight.
